The management committee was established in 2008 to stir up the IYC 2011 initiative. The group includes IUPAC officers and representatives of the major chemical federations from Europe, Africa, Asia, and Latin America, and representatives from the chemical industry and UNESCO.

John retired from the American Chemical Society after 25 years as administrator of International Activities and Awards and as a grants administrator with the Petroleum Research Fund. Earlier, he worked at the National Science Foundation and as a professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia and the Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil.

Born in Zimbabwe, and a graduate of the University of Cape Town with a Ph.D. in biochemistry, Julia worked at the University of Zimbabwe for 22 years, rising from lecturer to professor of biochemistry. In October 2003, she joined UNESCO in Paris as a program specialist and is now involved in efforts to promote international collaboration in the life sciences and chemistry.

David is a synthetic organic chemist at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. He has published more than 250 papers and a monograph on the synthesis of organic molecules. He is secretary general of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry. David was born in Wollongong, Australia, and graduated with a M.Sc. from the University of Sydney and a Ph.D. from Cambridge University. He worked at Monash University from 1965-1982 and moved to the chair of Organic Chemistry at UNSW in 1983.

Mark is process chemistry consultant for INEOS Nitriles in suburban Chicago. He holds an A.B. in chemistry from Princeton University and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. His research interests include homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, kinetics and mechanisms of organic reactions, and molecular modeling for the design of new catalysts. He has taught college-level courses at Ursuline College and John Carroll University. In IUPAC, Mark is Chair of the Committee on Chemistry and Industry, and coordinator of the IUPAC-UNESCO-UNIDO Safety Training Program.

John is an emeritus fellow and professor of Physical Chemistry at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, with research interests in matter transport in solid materials, including transdermal drug delivery. He has also served as head of the School of Chemistry, as dean of the Faculty of Science, dean of Research and as bursar of Trinity College. He is a former president of the Institute of Chemistry of Ireland and of the Inorganic Chemistry Division of IUPAC. Currently, John is treasurer of the Royal Irish Academy and treasurer of IUPAC.

Bryan is a professor emeritus of the University of Guelph, Canada. His field of expertise is physical chemistry, with research interests in laser spectroscopy and theoretical chemistry. He has served as president of the Canadian Society for Chemistry, chair of the Chemical Institute of Canada, and IUPAC president. Bryan is an elected member of the Executive of the International Council for Science (ICSU) and is chair of the ICSU Finance Committee.

Peter is professor of chemistry at the King’s University College in Edmonton, Canada, and co-director of the King’s CRYSTAL Centre for Visualization in Science. His research is in the areas of chemistry education and organic chemistry, and he is a 3M National Teaching Fellow. He was the task group leader for obtaining UN designation for 2011 as the International Year of Chemistry.

Nicole is the General Secretary of the French ‘Comité National de la Chimie’. She worked at the CNRS as deputy Director of the Chemistry Department until 2005, then as full Professor at the University Paris 6, where she was in charge of teaching at the interface chemistry-life sciences at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie. Her more recent interest is for natural products, and screening for molecules with antibacterial activity.

Gabriel is a professor of chemistry at the Universidad Metropolitanana, San Juan, Puerto Rico. He received his Ph.D. in analytical chemistry and his research interests are in environmental chemistry. He has about 50 publications and more than 200 presentations at scientific meetings. Gabriel is president of the Organizing Committee for the IUPAC 2011 Congress. He is also past and honorary president of the Federacion Latinoamericana de Asociaciones Quimicas.
